Dr. John P. Hittinger, VPAA
Dr. John P. Hittinger, VPAABorn outside of Indianapolis, Indiana at Camp Atterbury on February 8, 1952, the son of Francis Russell Hittinger and Anne Pollard; his father was a career Marine officer, who was killed in action in Quang Nam Province, the Republic of South Vietnam on March 9, 1968. John grew up on Marine Bases in Virginia, North Carolina, and Hawaii. John attended Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia, graduating in 1970. He went to the University of Notre Dame graduating 1974. He attended the Catholic University of America graduate program in philosophy where he completed a Master's Thesis on "Reason and Intellect in Two Texts of Thomas Aquinas," and a doctoral dissertation on “Natural Law in Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding.” He spent one year in the graduate program at the University of Dallas. In 1978 he accepted a faculty position at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. In 1985 accepted a position at the College of St Francis in Joliet, Illinois; he served as chairman of the philosophy and theology department from 1987-1991. In 1994 John accepted a position as the first civilian professor in the philosophy department at the United States Air Force Academy. He held rank of full professor and was awarded civilian of the year honor for 1996-1997. In the Spring of 2001, John was a sabbatical fellow at the Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs at St. Andrews University, Scotland where he worked on a book on the Morality of Warfare. In July 2001 he accepted the position of Academic Dean/Provost at St. Mary’s College of Ave Maria University in Orchard Lake, Michigan. He worked with the faculty and staff to develop a new Catholic integrated core curriculum. In 2003 he accepted a position at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit Michigan. John has published articles and presented papers on a variety of topics including John Locke, Jacques Maritain, military ethics, liberal education, political philosophy, and the thought of John Paul II. John has published three books, as the co-editor of Liberalism at the Crossroads: An Introduction to Contemporary Liberal Theory and its Critics (Rowman and Littlefield, 1994) and Reassessing the Liberal State: Reading Maritain’s Man and the State, (Catholic University of America Press, 2001). He authored Liberty, Wisdom and Grace: Thomism and Modern Democratic Theory. Lanham, Md.: Lexington Press, 2002. John is married to Molly Mulqueen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; he is the father of four children -- Jack (1986) Ellie (1988) James (1990) and Joseph (1994).
