Reference & Instruction Librarian

The University of St. Thomas, a private university committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking a Reference & Instruction Librarian to work at the Doherty Library beginning in September 2008. This is a full-time faculty tenure track position.  Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank.

The Reference & Instruction Librarian will be responsible to provide reference services and library instruction to our library patrons.  This librarian must work collaboratively and cooperatively with the library staff, especially with the other reference / instruction librarian with whom there are many shared common responsibilities.

Responsibilities include providing research help at the reference desk for the UST scholarly community, assisting with the development of the reference collection, preparing and revising library user guides and bibliographies, and weeding the reference collection.  In collaboration with the other reference librarians, contribute to the content of the library web page and the library news blog.  Collaborate proactively with faculty regarding their library, research, and instructional needs. Responsible to develop, plan and provide library instruction including basic and intermediate instruction as well as advanced information literacy classes.   Library instruction will involve conducting library orientations and teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes.  Supervision responsibilities include the hiring, training and scheduling of student assistants who work at the reference desk.  Responsible to schedule the reference desk shifts and to serve as the primary liaison to the part-time reference staff. 

An ALA accredited Master’s in Library Science is required.  A second master’s degree is required for tenure.  Prior experience working in a university reference department and teaching experience is preferred.  This position requires computer skills, excellent written and oral communication, and organizational skills.

Periodicals / Reference Librarian

The University of St. Thomas, a private university committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking a Periodicals Reference Librarian to work at the Doherty Library beginning in August 2008. This is a full-time faculty tenure track position.  Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank.


The Periodicals / Reference Librarian will be responsible for managing the periodical collection in paper, electronic and microform formats and will also assist with the provision of reference services to our patrons.   A collaborative and cooperative work ethic is required. 


The management of periodicals includes maintenance of the online serials holding system (currently Ebsco A-Z), periodicals check-in, claims, maintenance of the serials cardex, use of Backserv to acquire missing issues, preparation of periodicals for binding, adding/deleting electronic periodicals as needed, keeping informed of the latest developments in periodicals and implementing improvements as appropriate.  Reference responsibilities include providing research help at the reference desk for the UST scholarly community, assisting with the development of the reference collection, assisting with the library orientation classes (for freshmen and new students) and teaching some of the basic library instruction classes.  In collaboration with the other reference librarians, contribute to the content of the library web page and the library news blog.  There are also supervision responsibilities of student assistants working in the periodicals department and reference desk.
